Did you know that…
The Holstein breed was developed in the 18th century in the Netherlands, in the Friesland and Jutland regions, when floods and various diseases in the country created the need for a new dairy-type cattle breed that could produce a large amount of milk and be resistant to diseases. Holstein cows can have 10-14 lactations. Holstein breed cows are the most productive in the world. In Latvia, the best Holstein cows produce more than 16,000 kg of milk in 305 days. The average protein content in the milk of Latvian Holstein cows is 3.22%, and the fat content is 4.14%. Holstein cows are large, with good conformation, well-developed udders, and exceptional abilities to consume large amounts of roughage, with black-and-white or red-and-white coat patterns. A healthy Holstein calf weighs about 45 kg at birth. An adult Holstein cow typically weighs 600-900 kg, and the height at the withers is 145 cm or more.
