Did you know that…

The domestic sheep (Ovis aries) is a medium-sized subspecies of the wild sheep (Ovis orientalis) from the genus Ovis, belonging to the Bovidae family in the order Ruminantia. Humans have domesticated it for wool, meat, and milk production. Modern DNA studies have shown that the domestic sheep is directly related to only two subspecies of wild sheep (Ovis orientalis) – the Asiatic mouflon (Ovis orientalis orientalis) and the European mouflon (Ovis orientalis musimon). Additionally, it is possible that the European mouflon is not only one of the ancestors of the domestic sheep, but also that the domestic sheep began living in the wild thousands of years ago. Male sheep are called rams, castrated males are called wethers or ewe lambs, females are called ewes, and the offspring are called lambs. Domestic sheep are the most numerous sheep population of all sheep species, with their population exceeding one billion. They are raised worldwide, and for many cultures, sheep farming has historically been one of the primary occupations. Today, the main sheep farming countries are Australia, New Zealand, South America, Central America, and the British Isles.
