Did you know that…

The domestic sheep (Ovis aries) is a medium-sized subspecies of the wild sheep (Ovis orientalis) of the sheep genus (Ovis), which belongs to the bovid family (Bovidae) of the order of even-toed ungulates (Ruminantia). Humans domesticated it to obtain wool, meat and milk. Nowadays DNA studies have proven that the domestic sheep is directly related to only two subspecies of the wild sheep (Ovis orientalis) – the Asiatic mouflon (Ovis orientalis orientalis) and the European mouflon (Ovis orientalis musimon); moreover, it is possible that the European mouflon is not only one of the ancestors of the domestic sheep, but also that the domestic sheep began to live in the wild several thousand years ago. Male sheep are called rams, castrated males wethers or wether rams, females ewes and the young lambs. Domestic sheep are the most numerous sheep population of all sheep, their number slightly exceeds a billion. They are raised all over the world, and for many peoples it has historically been one of the main occupations. Nowadays the main sheep-farming countries are Australia, New Zealand, South America, Central America and the British Isles.
