Did you know that…

The alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is a domesticated animal from the camel family (Camelidae) that lives in the Andes mountains of South America. Its wild ancestor is the vicuña, although it is externally more similar to a small llama, with which the alpaca is closely related, similar to the guanaco. Alpacas (unlike llamas) have always been bred solely for their wool, which is used to make blankets, hats, ponchos, woolen fabrics for sewing clothes, gloves, socks, scarves, sweaters, and other knitted products. According to Peruvian classification, alpaca wool is available in more than 52 natural shades, while the International classification recognizes 22 shades. South American indigenous people have bred alpacas for wool production for thousands of years. During the Inca Empire, only the nobility could afford clothing made from alpaca wool. In South America, alpaca meat is also consumed, although it is very rarely sold commercially.
