Did you know that…
The domestic cat (Felis silvestris catus), also known as the house cat, is a small, carnivorous mammal of the feline family, domesticated more than 9,500 years ago. The cat is a very popular pet because it helps humans combat various pests such as mice, snakes, and even scorpions. Male cats are called tomcats, and females are called queens.
It is known that cats hunt more than 1,000 different animal species. They can be trained to perform various simple commands. Cats are capable of manipulating simple mechanisms, such as opening doors using door handles. The cat is possibly the most popular household pet in the world; there are about 600 million cats worldwide. According to genetic studies, all domestic cats are domesticated from the wildcat subspecies, the African wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica).
An adult cat’s average length from nose to tail is 50 centimeters. Females are smaller than males, but this largely depends on the breed. According to the Guinness World Records, the longest cat has measured 121.9 centimeters. Unlike dogs, cats do not have dwarf breeds. Cats typically weigh between 2.5 and 7 kg, although some breeds, such as the Maine Coon, can weigh around 11.3 kg. The average lifespan of a cat is between 15 and 20 years, but there have been cases where cats have lived up to 36 years. Cats live longer if they are not allowed outdoors. This protects them from various potential injuries and accidents.
