Did you know that…

The duck refers to a part of the duck family (Anatidae) of birds. The duck family is large, with several subfamilies, eight of which are classified as various species of ducks. All ducks are waterfowl and live in both freshwater and saltwater. They are medium-sized birds, but smaller than swans and geese. In Latvian, some species of ducks are also called gauras, gaigalas, kākauļi, ķerras, and krīkļi. Some species of subfamily ducks are called geese, such as the “teal geese” and “whistling geese,” although they are actually large-sized ducks.

Ducks are classified based on their swimming habits into dabbling ducks and diving ducks. Dabbling ducks obtain their food by immersing their bodies halfway in water, while diving ducks dive to catch food. When flying, diving ducks, unlike dabbling ducks, beat their wings very quickly.

Ducks are found on all continents except Antarctica. Species of ducks living in northern regions migrate southward during the winter, while species living in warmer regions are non-migratory. The most common duck species is the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), which can also be found throughout Latvia. Globally, ducks are a popular game species.
