The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a carnivore from the genus Vulpes in the Canidae family, found in almost all continents except South America and Australia. In Latvia, the fox appeared during the late post-glacial period and has always been widely distributed. The fox population in Latvia fluctuates annually between 10,000 and 12,000 individuals.

The fox’s diet primarily consists of rodent-like mammals; if these are scarce, the fox will also catch larger mammals such as hares, roe deer, wild boar piglets, and birds. More often than wolves, foxes use insects and plants (berries, fruits, seeds) in their diet.

The fox is active year-round. It usually hunts at dusk and night rather than during the day. In bad weather and extreme cold, the fox spends most of the day in a burrow or various natural shelters. The fox is a very cautious animal, orienting itself in the surrounding environment mainly through its sense of smell and hearing (its vision is much weaker). While hunting, the fox is excellent at using all natural opportunities to conceal itself. It moves through valleys, ditches, bushes, and forest cover, often stopping to assess the surroundings. It is fairly good at swimming and can climb sloping trees.

The fox mostly lives in families. During breeding, the fox typically arranges a den in abandoned badger or raccoon dog burrows or similar shelters; interestingly, the fox does not dig its own burrows. The young (usually 4-6 pups) are born in May and June. The pups live in the burrow for about 1.5 months. Afterward, they start to come out of the burrow and play in front of it. During this time, both parents intensively provide food and teach the young to hunt. At three months old, the pups leave their birth den.
