Did you know that…
Pigs (Sus) are one of the genera of the pig family (Suidae) within the order Artiodactyla. The genus Sus includes 9 extant species and 3 extinct species. Pigs are found throughout Eurasia and North Africa. In Latvia, there is one wild species—the wild boar (Sus scrofa). In livestock farming, the domesticated form, the domestic pig (Sus scrofa domestica), is raised. Pigs are closely related to peccaries (Tayassuidae) and hippopotamuses (Hippopotamidae).
Pigs have a compact body structure, large heads, short legs, and coarse fur. Their noses are snout-shaped, they have small eyes, and short tails, which can be curled in a ring, knotted, or straight. Each foot has 4 toes, with the 2 central ones being large and used for walking. Pigs do not sweat to cool down; they cool off by using water or mud. They also roll in mud to protect their skin from the sun, parasites, and flies. The largest pigs are wild boars (Sus scrofa), which can weigh over 300 kg. Pigs have very good hearing and smell, but poor eyesight.
In Latvia, the following terms are used in pig welfare: Pig – any age pig species animal kept for breeding or fattening; Boar – a male pig that has reached sexual maturity, used for breeding; Sow – a female pig after its first farrowing; Piglet – a pig from birth until it is weaned from the sow.
