Did you know that…

The domestic chicken or simply chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is a subspecies of the red junglefowl (Gallus gallus), part of the pheasant family (Phasianidae). The males of this species are called roosters, the females are hens, and the young birds are called chicks.

The chicken is one of the most common domesticated animals in the world and the most numerous bird globally. According to statistical data, in 2003, there were 24 billion chickens worldwide. There are about 250 chicken breeds globally, and in Latvia, one breed has been specifically developed – the Latvian dwarf chicken.

Chickens are primarily raised to provide food products: eggs and meat. Their feathers and down are also used in the production of blankets and pillows. In Latvia, the average person consumes about 200 eggs per year. In other European countries, the average consumption is about 250 eggs per person annually. In Europe, Portugal, Spain, and Italy have the highest egg consumption. The global leader in egg consumption is Japan, where a person eats an average of 450 eggs a year.
